Your attitude drives the choices you make, the results you
get and the quality of the life you lead.
Consider the following as a backdrop to my ultimate point.
It doesn’t get any funnier than the antics in an iconic,
comedy movie. The “big name” cast
delivers an uproarious experience to the viewer. They do that through following an outrageous
plot line in pursuit of hidden cash somewhere out in the California desert.
To say they experience detours and derailments in trying to
find the hidden (stolen) $350,000 is a stupendous understatement! Here’s a link to a synopsis of the movie which will help you see what I mean.
Their antics serve as a humorous example of dealing with detours,
so they don’t become total derailments as you pursue your goals in life.
Ever notice how often life throws unexpected barriers in
your path. Many times, people in these situations react in an almost stupefied
way.
They ask things like: How could that have happened? or, Where
did that come from? or, Why me, I was doing so well? And, a myriad of other
reactions.
The bottom-line is NOT that the barrier popped-up but what
you do to deal with it. It's that thought that led me to the title of this blog.
To put the title in its purest perspective, let's take a
moment to consider the key words: detour and derail.
First, consider the word, derail. By its very essence, should you allow yourself
to be derailed, you are totally knocked off your current track. It becomes not
just a minor annoyance but a total destroyer of your direction and momentum.
You lay on the side of the track in a heap of twisted
emotions and basically a total wreck. Allowing barriers to derail you destroys your
dreams and goals that lay at the end of the track.
On the other hand, take the idea of barriers being managed as detours rather than derailments.
On the other hand, take the idea of barriers being managed as detours rather than derailments.
Many times, in life you have been on highways or roads where
unexpected barriers appeared. In those situations, you had a stated
destination; home, work, a play, a child's birthday party, whatever. Regardless
of the destination, you knew you had to get there, and nothing was going to
stop you.
Up pops the very purpose of the word detour. The concept of
the word should get you thinking about alternative routes to your destination.
It allows you to keep progressing toward your dreams and goals vs. falling on
the side-rail of life in a mangled, broken wreck.
Every day realize you can detour and not derail.
