How many times have you said, “It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3? Come on! Everybody has said it at least once in their life. ;<)
The phrase (or, sentence depending on how it is used) has become iconic and ubiquitous.
Take music for instance. A quick Google search for “song 1 2 3” brings up 3,560,000,000 results. Even music can’t get away from using the phrase to suggest simplicity!
However, the “Biggy” for the musical use of the phrase came in 1965 and shot to Number 1 on the Pop Music charts.
The song’s title? “1 2 3” and it was recorded by Len Barry. Here’s a link to a recording by Barry and some additional background information, if you have no idea what or who I’m talking about!
All of this is very interesting to you (I hope) but the concept of the simplicity suggested using “1, 2, 3” doesn’t generally apply to living your life. It’s not that simple, is it?
The root of the problem, in that regard, is life has too many unexplained, unexpected, and, in too many cases, uncontrollable occurrences. It’s not like taking candy from a baby…to use another iconic and ubiquitous phrase.
However, the phrase in a very specific way absolutely does apply to successfully living your life. If you pursue living your life in the order of 1, 2, 3 (3 necessary and valuable outcomes), you can’t help but have an awesome life.
And, yes, you can achieve those outcomes!! It’s as simple as making the decision to do it.
So, what are the desired outcomes for living an awesome life? In very specific order they are:
1. Self-respect
2. Peace of mind
3. Happiness

It’s a simple and difficult reality…Difficult because, as mentioned earlier, life has a way of getting in the way of simple formulas because of its surprises.
Even so, if you strive for self-respect you will achieve peace of mind and with those two outcomes in your control happiness will be the inevitable result.
Your self-respect is driven by a sense of pride and confidence in yourself because you know you always act with honor and dignity. Honor and dignity not only toward yourself but also toward all your fellow human beings.

There is nothing more complex to achieving a sense of self-respect. Act with honor and dignity in all that you think and do and regardless of life’s surprises you will always have your self-respect.
If you have your self-respect, then you have a great shot at achieving peace of mind. Peace of mind…that oh so sought-after state of tranquility, well-being, serenity, satisfaction and comfort just to name a few descriptors.
Think about it! How could you achieve any of the above mindset conditions without feeling a sense of self-respect?
My answer to that is peace of mind begins with your self-respect!
Yes, you must know in your heart of hearts you always do your absolute best at everything you attempt. But, the result of what you attempt must always give you a sense of self-respect or your peace of mind will be lost or at best disturbed.
If your peace of mind is lost, happiness is impossible.
We could take all day to attempt to describe what happiness really is! I believe it can be summarized as the mindset where you can’t help but smile with pleasure and satisfaction.
Focusing on achieving and maintaining self –respect results in a state of pleasure and satisfaction. If you’re in a mindset of pleasure and satisfaction, you have, by definition, achieved peace of mind. With both of those outcomes in place you can’t help but be happy!
