Do you remember the TV show from the 80’s entitled, Crime
Story? This show was on TV when the lead
actor, Dennis Farina, had dark hair.
That’s how far back it goes!
Any of you who remember Farina know most of the shows he was
in he had salt and pepper hair color.
Anyway, the show lasted three seasons and was popular. I was reminded of it because the lead
character, Mike Torrello (Farina) was in a constant battle trying to stop the
crime committing antagonist, Ray Luca, from rising in the ranks of organized
crime.
Well, in a similar fashion you could be having a constant
battle. I’m talking about the crimes you
commit against your future through having a bad attitude about life.
It’s an attitude
worse than that of the criminal attitude of Ray Luca in Crime Story!
Luca was hell bent on rising to the top of the hierarchy in
his world of criminal activities. If you
continue with your lousy attitude, you clearly are hell bent on dropping to the
bottom of the hierarchy of opportunities in your life!
Your attitude is nothing more than the way you think about
things. You can make a choice to change
your thinking.
Just like any criminal you can choose to “go straight” and
make positive decisions.
Confess your potential crimes against your future! Own up to them; learn from them; and
subscribe to any or all the following 7 ways you can improve your attitude and
maximize your future.
I confess…I believe the 7 ways discussed below are your get
out of jail free card to a life well lived.
BEGIN WITH “WHY” IN MIND
Nothing in your life will change, least of all your
attitude, if you don’t stop and take inventory.
Answer these questions:
Why is my
current attitude what it is?
Why did I
make the choices to think the way I do?
Why would I
want to change to a different way of thinking?
Why do I
think a positive attitude would be better for my future?
Your objective in answering the
above questions in to find your passion for taking positive action. Finding that passion will give you the
necessary belief that you can change your thinking and your attitude.
If you don’t believe it, then you
can’t do it. Don’t bother with the other
6 ways to improve your attitude until you are sure of your answers for
“why.”
Confess your “why” and you will be
free to achieve anything you want to be, do or have.
SEE WHAT IT IS YOU WANT
When you have specific, written
goals, you can feel you have purpose. I
like to say, a goal only in the head is already dead!
You can’t change anything in your
life until you know specifically what you want.
That is the job of defining, stating and writing specific goals.
So, for everything you want to be,
do or have in your life create a specific, written goal.
And, for each of those goals make
sure you have a very strong reason why you want to achieve the goal.
When you have your goals written,
find representative images of those goals.
Post those pictures on what is called a Vision Board.
Your Vision Board will help you
physically see your goal and give you more powerful impetus to escape the
prison of limited thinking.
DON’T LIVE IN A REPLICA OF A JAIL CELL
You may never have spent any time in
a real jail cell. Yet, your physical surroundings
can contribute to a sense of being imprisoned.
Feeling imprisoned entraps your
thinking into negativity. Fix it by
brightening up your place where you live or work.
You don’t have to buy a new house or
anything else that extravagant! If you don’t
have the creative skills to destroy the “jail cell” feeling of your place, hire
somebody who does.
At a minimum, clean the place
up! Keep it organized! Clutter creates confusion and confusion
destroys your focus on the positive.
TUBE THE TUBE
Now, I must confess I am the first
one to reinforce the belief being well informed is foundational to living a
full life.
However, leveraging being well
informed requires you to accept the good with the bad. By good and bad, I mean the things you judge
that you like or dislike.
Developing a positive attitude
requires you not to allow your attitude to be derailed by what you judge to be
the ignorance of others. If you get all hetup by what others do and say and allow all that to negatively affect you,
you’re committing a crime against your mind.
So, one way to minimize what you
perceive as the ignorance of the world around you is to stop watching the
“tube” so much. It’s such a wasteland of
negativity it is a crime against humanity!
BE A FUND OF INFORMATION
One of the most powerful things you
can do to improve your attitude is to grow your base of knowledge.
The more you know the better you
feel about yourself and your potential!
Opportunity is born from accepting
new and different things. But
opportunity can’t be seen when your mind is a crime scene of negativity.
Discipline yourself to learn new
ideas. Read; watch; study; and listen to
learn about those areas in your life of great interest to you.
EXERCISE FOR YOUR MIND AND BODY
Did you know there is a very
beneficial drug you can take that will make you “high” and you won’t have
committed a crime in taking it?
If there is a contemporary crime
against yourself and humanity that may exceed all others, it is obesity. Given the increase in obese people throughout
the world, it could be said the condition is out of control. Its negative impact on the infrastructure of
society measures in the 100s of billions of dollars.
One legal solution to the
problem? The drug I referenced above,
and you don’t have to go to the rough side of town and buy a “hit” off of some
sleazy criminal.
The drug is already on your person
and even if you’re in the airport and a drug sniffing dog approaches you it
won’t be able to detect you are guilty of possession.
The drug is endorphins
and the only way you can get it and its beneficial, healthy effects is through
physical activity.
You may have heard the phrase,
runner’s high. It is the body producing
endorphins while exercising vigorously that produces that sense of well-being. Stress is reduced and your body grows strong
and lean with the overall effect being attitude improvement.
Shoot-up all the endorphins you want,
and you will avoid a life sentence of physical and mental malaise.
AFFIRM IT TO DO IT
Remember the time you knew you were
going to succeed at something even before you did?
Somehow success seemed affirmed and
all you had to do was take action.
I’ve had many such events in my life,
but one always stands out in my mind. I
assumed (affirmed) years before it happened that I would be first string on my
junior high school’s varsity basketball team.
I knew it from the time I was in the
4th grade. It happened
because I affirmed it every day in my mind and actions.
You can create a lifetime of
affirmed events. Doing so makes life so
much more positive and fulfilling.
You do it through practicing the use
of positive affirmation statements.
Here’s a link to several examples you may want to consider.
Another way of thinking about it is
to...confess success even before you’re eligible for parole to achieve it.
Why not commit the ultimate crime
against a bad attitude! Change
it…through using these 7 “breakout” ways!
How many of the ways for improving your
attitude will you immediately put into practice? Why will you take those actions?
